What Is a Munchkin Bernedoodle?

The Munchkin Bernedoodle is a newer, smaller variation of the Bernedoodle developed for families who love the classic Bernedoodle appearance and personality but prefer a more compact companion.

Our Munchkin Bernedoodles combine Bernese Mountain Dog, Poodle, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel genetics. Through advanced multigenerational breeding, our goal is to produce small Bernedoodles with excellent temperaments, beautiful straight-to-wavy coats, reduced shedding, and the traditional Bernedoodle appearance.

For families comparing Mini Bernedoodles, Micro Bernedoodles, and Munchkin Bernedoodles, the Munchkin is an excellent option for those specifically wanting a smaller companion.

History of the Munchkin Bernedoodle

The traditional Bernedoodle was developed by crossing the Bernese Mountain Dog with the Poodle. This combination brought together the affectionate, loyal personality of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence, trainability, and desirable coat qualities associated with the Poodle.

As Bernedoodles became increasingly popular, breeders began developing smaller generations. Standard Bernedoodles were followed by Mini Bernedoodles and Micro Bernedoodles, providing families with increasingly smaller options.

Our Munchkin Bernedoodle program takes this development another step by incorporating Cavalier King Charles Spaniel genetics into advanced multigenerational Bernedoodle lines.

The Cavalier helps us produce a smaller, more compact dog while contributing the affectionate, gentle, people-oriented personality for which Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known.

How Big Do Munchkin Bernedoodles Get?

Our Munchkin Bernedoodles typically mature between approximately 13 and 23 pounds.

Their compact size makes them an excellent choice for families wanting a small Bernedoodle that is easier to travel with, easier to handle, and suitable for many different living situations.

If you’re searching for a small Bernedoodle, Micro Bernedoodle, Mini Bernedoodle, or Munchkin Bernedoodle puppy, adult size is an important consideration. While individual puppy sizes can vary, our Munchkin Bernedoodle breeding program is specifically focused on producing compact, companion-sized Bernedoodles.

Straight & Wavy, Lower-Shedding Coats

One of the biggest advantages we see from incorporating Cavalier King Charles Spaniel genetics into our Munchkin Bernedoodle lines is coat quality.

Bernedoodles with greater Poodle influence can sometimes develop extremely curly coats. While beautiful, tightly curled coats can require considerably more brushing and grooming and may be more prone to tangling and matting without regular maintenance.

Incorporating Cavalier genetics helps us move away from many of these extremely curly coats and allows us to focus on the beautiful straight-to-loose-wavy coats many families prefer.

At the same time, our advanced multigenerational Bernedoodle genetics allow us to selectively breed for important coat traits, including furnishings and reduced shedding. A Bernedoodle does not necessarily need an extremely curly Poodle-like coat to have desirable lower-shedding characteristics.

Our goal is to produce Munchkin Bernedoodle puppies with beautiful, soft, straight-to-wavy coats that are easier to maintain while retaining the reduced-shedding qualities many families seek in a Bernedoodle.

No individual dog can be guaranteed to be completely non-shedding or hypoallergenic for every person.

Munchkin Bernedoodle Colors

Our Munchkin Bernedoodle puppies can come in many of the beautiful colors and patterns traditionally associated with Bernedoodles, including:

Traditional tricolor

Merle tricolor

Chocolate tricolor

Chocolate

Red and white tuxedo

Other traditional Bernedoodle color combinations

Despite their smaller size and the addition of Cavalier genetics, our goal is to maintain the recognizable Bernedoodle appearance with expressive faces, furnished coats, beautiful markings, and the soft teddy-bear appearance families love.

Munchkin Bernedoodle Temperament

Temperament is one of the most important considerations in our Munchkin Bernedoodle breeding program.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for being affectionate, devoted, and family-oriented. Poodles contribute intelligence and trainability, while Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their loving, gentle, and people-focused personalities.

Through careful selection and multigenerational breeding, Bow Creek Kennels strives to produce Munchkin Bernedoodles that are affectionate, intelligent, social, and family-oriented companions.

Common Questions about Bernedoodles

What is the temperament of most Bernedoodles?

Bernedoodles are loved for their affectionate, loyal, and easygoing personalities. They are known for combining the gentle and calm nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence and trainability of the Poodle, creating a companion that is both loving and highly adaptable.

Most Bernedoodles are very people-oriented and thrive on being part of the family. They typically form strong bonds with their owners and enjoy spending time around children, adults, and other pets. Their friendly and social nature makes them excellent family companions as well as wonderful emotional support and therapy-style dogs.

Bernedoodles are often described as:

Gentle and affectionate

Intelligent and eager to please

Loyal and family-oriented

Playful without being overly hyper

Social and friendly with people and other animals

Calm and adaptable in the home

Many Bernedoodles have a low to moderate energy level, especially as they mature, making them a great fit for families looking for a companion that enjoys both playtime and relaxing around the house. They are typically happiest when included in daily activities and do best in environments where they receive regular interaction, attention, and companionship.

Because of their intelligence and desire to please, Bernedoodles are usually very trainable and respond well to positive reinforcement. Early socialization and consistent training help them develop into confident, well-mannered companions.

One of the most loved traits of the Bernedoodle breed is their naturally loving personality. Many owners describe them as goofy, intuitive, cuddly, and emotionally connected to their families, making them not only beautiful dogs, but true lifelong companions.

What is a Bernedoodles coat like?

Bernedoodles come in a variety of beautiful coat types ranging from curly and ultra low-shedding to loose straight coats with a more natural, teddy bear appearance. All three coat types are generally considered low to non-shedding, making Bernedoodles a popular choice for families looking for a cleaner home environment and a more allergy-friendly companion.

Curly Coats

Curly Bernedoodles typically have tight curls similar to a Poodle coat. These coats are usually the most allergy-friendly and lowest shedding of all Bernedoodle coat types. Curly coats create a plush, fluffy appearance and often give puppies a very soft teddy bear look. They do require regular brushing and grooming to help prevent matting and keep the coat healthy and full.

Wavy Coats

Wavy coats are one of the most popular Bernedoodle coat types. They feature soft, loose waves that combine the best qualities of both the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle. Wavy coats are generally low to non-shedding while maintaining a natural, relaxed appearance. Many families love this coat type because it offers the perfect balance of softness, easy maintenance, and the classic Bernedoodle look.

Straight Coats

Straight-coated Bernedoodles have a smoother, more laid-back appearance with little to no curl. These coats often resemble the beautiful flowing coat of the Bernese Mountain Dog while still being softer and easier to maintain. Straight coats are also generally considered low to non-shedding depending on genetics and are loved for their natural, plush look and gentle texture.

Coat Variety & Appearance

No two Bernedoodles are exactly alike, which is part of what makes the breed so special. Coat texture can range from tight curls to loose waves and straight plush coats, with each puppy developing its own unique style, personality, and overall appearance as they mature.
